Conservación de la patata
At Antonio Marco we can help you with the storage, transportation and preservation of carrots. This is one of the most cultivated vegetables worldwide, and it is said to come from Asia. We are talking about a vegetable widely known worldwide for the great diversity of uses it has and for its high vitamin content. The saying goes that always before sunbathing a carrot.

Origin and varieties of carrots

The origin of this vegetable comes from Asia. It is said that it took place in Central Asia, although it was already known by Greeks and Romans, however, it was not until the 17th century that the first orange carrots appeared, nor did it begin to be a relevant crop.

We mainly distinguish the multiple varieties of carrots, according to the shape, color and date of cultivation. We have highlighted those that we consider the most relevant in the Spanish market:

  • Danvers: this type of carrots are of medium-long length, pointed and with a wide neck.
  • Imperator: this variety is longer and more slender in the neck area than the Danvers.
  • Nantes: cylindrical, straight and smooth. Both the neck and the base are rounded. Mostly used for fresh consumption.
  • Flakkee: this type has large, long, cone-shaped roots with robust leaves. It is marketed for both fresh market and industry.
  • Paris: this variety is characterized by being blunt and smaller than the previous ones.
  • Chantenay: they end in a point, and are more elongated than the Paris variety.
  • Amsterdam: it has an intense orange color and a cylindrical shape. Its flesh is juicy and has a sweet flavor. It is one of the most commercialized varieties.

Season and harvesting of carrots for later preservation

This vegetable is available all year round, as it is grown all over the world, using different growing cycles, depending on the varieties. It is true that the use of cold storage is very important for the preservation of vegetables in periods of low demand or oversupply.

As far as carrot harvesting in Spain is concerned, we encounter different diseases and problems:

  • Diseases:
      • Wet rot
      • Sour rot
      • Black rot
      • Gray rot
      • Soft watery rot
  • Problems:
    • Wilt and weight loss
    • Sprout and root drop

Here are some key steps for cold storage of carrots.

Carrot storage for distribution

The importance of a logistics warehouse for carrot storage is key. This vegetable, one of the most consumed in the world, is of great importance for all cold storage companies in the Levante area. With around 39,000 tons produced, Spain is the sixth country in the world in carrot exports.

Countries such as China, Russia, the United States and Poland have gained weight in the European market, where they are supported by logistics warehouses where they store carrots in cold storage to extend their shelf life and then distribute them at times when Spanish production does not meet demand.

The Carrot, as a perishable food, requires a storage temperature between 5-10°C, depending on the customer’s requirements, this may vary. A key element in the good conservation of carrots is;

Transporte de la patata

The ideal temperature for the transport of carrots is between 5-10ºC continuously, although it is true that carrots do not suffer much from temperature changes in the short term. The transport companies of Alicante and Murcia are focused on the transport of carrots to international markets. We are companies that are in the proximity of the product, and our know-how, which we have achieved thanks to our years of experience.

We have found that temperature controlled storage is key, but this work will mean nothing if we do not perform an optimal refrigerated transport of goods. Antonio Marco is a company that can develop the activities of: transport, storage and conservation of carrots.
